Let's go down under!

Hot temperatures, kangaroos and endless landscapes in the outback – classic images of Australia. Even Australians have to admit that these are not mere clichés. They really do influence our lives down under. A report about the market launch of the new Actros in Australia.

Full speed ahead: the Actros en route through the outback.

Australian truckers, and of course their trucks, cover long distances and work long shifts behind the wheel. One of our test trucks, an Arocs, is on the road as a road train with a gross combination weight of 120 tonnes, and regularly drives from Perth to the Pilbara region and back, a total of around 2800 km. Distances like this are not unusual here. And from now on that is a challenge for which the new Actros is also perfectly prepared: last Tuesday the official launch commenced with an event in Northern Queensland – the flagship model from Mercedes-Benz Trucks is now also available down under.

More than 260 guests – among them many customers and colleagues working in Sales – came to the launch in the tropical region of Australia. In keeping with the unusual market, the event was held in a clearing right in the middle of sugar-cane fields. The customers were delighted, both with the event and with the Actros. The general opinion: when it comes to efficiency, dependability and comfort, the new Actros beats everything there has previously been in the Australian market.

Before the market launch we gave a great deal of thought to how we can adapt the truck to local circumstances: during our 18-month test programme we covered more than 1 million kilometres with a total of 20 trucks – and the tests provided results showing exactly what Australian customers require of their vehicles. 35 freight operators were involved in these tests, and they were able to try the trucks in their normal day-to-day business. Together we found the answers to important questions: Which models are most suitable? What specifications do we need to offer? And what fundamental changes need to be made for the Australian market?

The most major modifications are certainly the installation of a typically Australian spring core mattress in the cab, a navigation system configured for Australia and extra-large fuel tanks holding up to 1,100 litres. Otherwise the feedback was very positive throughout: one older trucker flatly stated that this was the best truck he had ever driven. Praise indeed – especially since he has certainly sat on many a driver's seat in his time. The drivers were particularly enthusiastic about the large cab and the quality of the interior, while the schedulers praised the extremely good fuel consumption values which will be one of the main incentives to purchase this excellent truck. There was also very positive feedback about the many safety systems in the new Actros, particularly for Active Brake Assist and Proximity Control Assist. Mercedes-Benz has set a new standard on the continent.
