Two UK drivers try out Mercedes-Benz safety technology on the track.

Aaron Cluckie and Geoff Sales attended the latest RoadStars safety training weekend in Germany and were given the chance to try out Mercedes-Benz technology on the track and learn new driving skills.

Two UK drivers won the opportunity to try out new driving skills at the RoadStars Safety Training Course last weekend.

Having won a recent RoadStars competition, fleet owner-operator Aaron Cluckie and driver trainer Geoff Sales, along with Mercedes-Benz Product Manager Rupert Barnard, flew out to at Baden-Airpark, Germany, where they had the chance to try out the safety features on a range of vehicles, including Actros and Antos rigids, tractor units and trailers.

The pair joined 22 other drivers from 7 different countries for a whole weekend of training, which included both theory and track sessions.

On the track experience.

Theory sessions included discussing the importance of driving dynamics and safety-assistance systems in truck safety, which the drivers then took out on the track.

Here, they were tutored by Mercedes-Benz instructors on emergency braking and avoiding action, driving on special surfaces and in special conditions and the role of the Electronic Stability Program. In addition, they were given some tips on how to optimise their steering and drive more efficiently.

This not only meant that Aaron and Geoff got to try out new driving skills, but to put the latest Mercedes-Benz safety technology to the test and meet other drivers from around the world.

“The RoadStars team put on a brilliant event, and it was great to see drivers from all over Europe sharing their experiences.”

A successful event.

Rupert Barnard said that the on-track elements of RoadStars safety training meant that all of the drivers could really get behind the wheel of the latest safety technology.

He said, “The RoadStars Safety Training is a brilliant opportunity to experience how the technology Mercedes-Benz develops assists drivers in their daily work. Of course we hope that they never have to use these systems, but it’s nice to know they are there in the background.”
