An Actros delivers the BFG to London

DRIVERS

How do you get a 7 metre tall cake statue of the BFG to London? With an Actros of course!

Driver Ant Hayes of Stagefreight was tasked with delivering the BFG culinary masterpiece to London on behalf of Michelle Sugar Art and Mr Kipling, to launch the new Mr Kipling Roald Dahl cakes.

Challenge accepted!

Stagefreight gladly took up the challenge of delivering the 11 foot statue, made of 7,500 mouth-watering cakes, from Michelle’s studio in Kent to Primrose Hill, London.

Driver Ant began the journey in his Actros at 8:30pm the night before, in Kent, where he met Michelle. Whilst she applied the finishing touches to the cakes, he assessed how he was going to move the Big Friendly Giant from the studio, across the road and then into his trailer.

To exit the studio he decided on a custom-made ramp, the strategic use of a forklift truck and lots of teamwork! Once across the street, the truck had to be stabilised, before Ant and his helpers used a strap system to hoist the statue in to the trailer (all without touching the delicious cakes of course!).

Once the cakes had fully cooled it was time to hit the road.

An Actros ensures a smooth journey.

They’re off! Ant and the Big Friendly Giant travelled to London in his Mercedes-Benz truck, with a support truck leading the way to warn of uneven roads and potholes. At 5am, following a smooth ride, they reached Regents Park and began the careful trek with a forklift to Primrose Hill.

A steady climb ensued, before they arrived at the top of Primose Hill. The BFG was arranged for his photoshoot with the press before surprising Londoners on their morning commute.

A typical day for this trucker.

This was simply a typical day for trucker Ant. He’s transported various unusual items in the past, including 250 tonne powder modules, helicopter propellers and a giant teapot for Yorkshire Tea!

However, even he was impressed by the sheer effort and talent involved in this particular tasty task.

“It was one of the best projects I’ve worked on so far”
