Swiss Mercedes-Benz DriverTrainer instructing at an international level

Story

International training.

Mercedes-Benz trucks are in operation in numerous fields of the transport industry. And of course this includes the heavy-duty and special transportation sector. At the request of the Mercedes-Benz national distributor in Austria, Mercedes-Benz Switzerland shared their manpower and experience by sending their DriverTrainer Anton Graber to their Austrian colleagues.

Family-owned Spiegl Transport GmbH & Co KG, located in Pettnau in Tyrol, is managed in the second generation by Alfred Spiegl, and family members of the following generation are already working for the business. Since 2018, an Arocs 4163 8×6/4 with a turbo retarder clutch (TRC) has been in operation there.

The company with various crane vehicles specialises in all types of special transport jobs and particularly in the transportation of steel cables for mountain railways. Here transportation jobs in the toughest terrain are carried out as well as routine work such as taking construction machines from A to B, etc. The new Arocs is a huge benefit for such special tasks and its drivetrain is ideal; turbo retarder clutch, 16-speed transmission and permanent all-wheel drive with reduction gear.

It was the Swiss DriverTrainer's job to better acquaint the experienced driver with the new vehicle so that he can make better and more comprehensive use of the advantages offered by the Arocs TRK and thus implement the numerous small details and "little helpers" to much greater effect. Thanks to training with expert instruction, driver Martin Kirchmair was able to experience the advantages of the TRK in an impressive fashion and learn how to further improve safety for future tours, certain that he can also demand this of the vehicle.

Upon receiving the request from his Austrian colleagues, Anton realised straight away that for transportation tasks such as this, there had to be real transport specialists at work and that for him personally, as a former special transport driver, it would be a joy to teach these colleagues about the new technology in detail.

The job was to transport a cable reel weighing approx. 48 t from Romanshorn on the Swiss side of Lake Constance via Arlberg – the Reschen Pass – Brenner to Meransen in South Tyrol where it would be used in the construction of a new chairlift on the Gitschberg mountain. Along the transportation route there were many uphill and downhill gradients. No matter where they were on the route; on the Reschen Pass, in the Vinschgau area or on the Brenner section; right up to the destination it is an ideal route with numerous very different traffic situations. Pulling away in tight, inclined bends as well as slow driving through very slow throughways or roundabouts, downward slopes for ideal use of the retarder or whilst travelling slowly, almost at walking speed – super!

The last item on the journey was the entrance to the construction site. Entry was only possible via a track built specifically for the construction site with an almost 360° uphill bend before the construction site. It was now time to implement everything that had been tested and practised; which the driver mastered brilliantly. And he did it all in the presence of his boss, “Fredi”, who was visibly satisfied and convinced that he had made the right decision in buying the new Arocs.
