Success! Lena Evers has successfully completed the training to be a professional driver

RoadStars meets

“It’s not just a job.”

Her first tour alone, demanding lessons and her passion for driving trucks. Lena Evers (23) on her vocational training as a professional driver.

Lena, congratulations on passing your exam! What’s the plan from here?

Thank you very much! I’ve just come back from my holiday and am packing my things back into my Actros. I’m staying on as a driver at Akkermann Transporte GmbH, where I also did my training.

The training took three years: what was the biggest challenge for you during this time?

As a woman, the biggest challenge was establishing and proving myself in a male-dominated field.

What helped you to do that? Did you have any tricks?

I got into the habit of not always saying yes to everything – especially to people who are of the opinion that women have no place in the professional driver industry.

What happens in the final exam and how should you prepare for it?

You have to do a lot for the exam. It’s not enough to just be there physically. You should really pay attention at school. The expectations on you are very high.

Where did your first solo tour take you?

From Moormerland in East Frisia to Hamburg.

And what was your first longer tour?

That was from Bremen to Illingen near Stuttgart. I was really worked up and hoped I’d find everything.

In which area do you like driving most and why?

There aren’t any particular places where I like to drive most. I like to drive everywhere and love new challenges.

What are the most important things that you have with you on your tours?

A map, water-can, mobile phone, satnav, clothes and, not to be forgotten, a good mood and fun at work.

What would you recommend to people who are thinking about doing the training? What should they consider?

It should be clear to them that they’ll often be very far away from home. Mentally, you’ve always got to focus on the job. But if you decide to do the training, then do it!

Would this career path still be the right one for you today?

I’d do it time and again, because it’s not just my job but also my passion.
