Twice the power on the construction site: two Actros 1848 LS

Story

In constant use with a heavy load.

They’ve already managed thousands of cubic metres. Two Actros articulated dumper trucks are constantly on the go for a huge excavation project in the west of Stuttgart.

Convinced of the Actros: Dirk Möller (left) and Friedhelm Steinwand.

Dirk Möller and Friedhelm Steinwand rave on about the highlights of their articulated dumper trucks – above all the fully networked, digital Multimedia Cockpit and MirrorCam. But the two Actros 1848 LS 4×2 with an 12.8 litre OM 471 engine and 350 kW have also been a complete hit in their hauliers’ fleet with their other features.

“We were sceptical at the start but once we had some time to get used to them, we’re now completely convinced,” says Friedhelm Steinwand, who has preferred driving Mercedes‑Benz trucks for 30 years. “MirrorCam gives us a much better and open view of what’s in front of us mainly when making a turn, on roundabouts, when changing lane, when merging into moving traffic and when manoeuvring.”

His colleague Dirk Möller only needed one day to get used to the new system: “MirrorCam is awesome and I’m completely satisfied. Especially how the camera view moves along with every movement of the vehicle and the virtually non-existent level of pollution are just amazing. The Multimedia Cockpit is also fantastic. All important information about the route and vehicle is clearly displayed. This makes our communication easier and considerably improves our workflows.”

150 tonnes per day.

They have a lot to offer. The hauliers Schuon, for whom Dirk Möller and Friedhelm Steinwand drive, has already transported thousands of cubic metres of excavated soil to the region’s landfill sites since September 2020. Per day, the both Actros 1848 LS do six to twelve trips to the landfill sites with around 26 tonnes of excavated soil on board each. This means that each of the trucks covers 400 kilometres per day and moves up to 15  tonnes of soil.

On the way back, the two dumper trucks then bring back lots of gravel and crushed rock from the surrounding plants, which are needed to compact the soil on the large construction site on the A81 from Stuttgart to Singen. A state-of-the-art full-service hospital should be erected there by the end of 2025.

Both Actros are equipped with a comprehensive safety package to avoid critical situations on the road and construction site as much as possible. Active Brake Assist 5 and Stability Control Assist are included as well as the Lane Keeping Assist, Proximity Control Assist, Attention Assist and traffic sign assist. Friedhelm Steinwand praises Sideguard Assist: “It can recognise obstacles on the passenger side, which is extremely useful when making a right turn.”

Indispensable features.

Frank Wohlgemuth, fleet manager at Alfred Schuon GmbH, also confirms that the two new trucks fulfil the expectations that the hauliers has of its trucks with flying colours: “MirrorCam, the safety assistance systems, Hydraulic Auxiliary Drive and many other innovative features are indispensable in meeting the high demands of our work. Especially as there is a lot of time pressure on this demanding new project.”

And Dirk Möller adds his opinion: “Especially when traversing gravel pits, quarries and landfills with steep inclines, I’d no longer want to do without Hydraulic Auxiliary Drive.”
