Sparkling freight: Manuel’s spectacular trips with the Actros 1846

Story

Wellness in bottles.

Manuel López transports mineral water in Aragon and, to this purpose, drives right to its source.

Poplar trees ahead with ochre-coloured leaves and the perfume of pines behind – Manuel López drives his Actros 1846 over the bridge of the Tranquera dam. Sunrays fall to the left and right, down onto the emerald-green water.

In the middle of the Iberian mountains, on a narrow road in the valley of the River Mesa, he takes one curve after another. You can see his concentration. “The gorges are 100 metres deep. You have to be very careful here,” he says.

Refreshment from the mountains.

Manuel is on the way to a spring near the gorge where the water is filled directly into 33 cl, 50 cl, 1.5-litre and eight-litre containers, which he either transports to the bottling company’s own warehouse or to large shopping centres.

When he is just one kilometre away, Manuel opens the windows. “I enjoy the silence of the mountains,” he explains.

He is expected at the bottling company. He greets the operations manager and starts to prepare the trailer carefully for loading. As soon as the goods – or “the wellness in bottles” as Manuel likes to call his freight – is loaded, he drinks a few big gulps of water himself.

The topic of wellness has become more and more important to Manuel over the years. “I am now 40 years old and have to take care of my health.”

Manuel does not just look after himself; he takes care of his Actros, too. The decoration in the cab is subtle. A number plate with the words “Aragon on wheels” hangs on the windscreen. “That is a social network group, in which discussions are held about the region,” he explains. In addition, it is the name of a television programme from Saragossa.

“I like to keep in touch with the latest motor sport news and all the races on the Motorland Aragón racetrack,” he adds. Manuel says that he is not very active in the group. But if he does post something, it is about the advantages of the Actros, in particular about the Fleetboard, with which he has reduced his fuel consumption to 26 litres per 100 kilometres.
