Joaquín Andrés Elena works for Cementos El Molino

Story

A strong character.

Joaquín Andrés Elena embodies the energy of his native region of Teruel. As too does the material he transports: cement.

Joaquín knows exactly what needs to be done when loading the cement.

It's 8.30 a.m. In the dry flatlands of Santa Eulalia, the relentless north wind leaves its mark. But it doesn't hinder Joaquín Andrés Elena as he drives his Actros 1845 between huge mounds of limestone, slag and cement clinker.

Joaquín Andrés feels very much at home among the installations of the El Molino cement manufacturing plant. It's been four years since he joined the Teruel-based company which specialises in the production and transport of cement. "The thing I like most about transporting building materials is the contact with the people," he says.

Joaquín Andrés energetically begins filling up his truck with the finished product. He checks that the transfer of the cement from the silo to the drum of the truck runs problem-free. "There are various types of cement," he explains. The quality of the cement affects the durability and resistance of the buildings or infrastructure for which it is used. Cementos El Molino produce seven different types of cement, which Joaquín Andrés transports either as loose bulk material or filled into sacks.

The customers – such as concrete manufacturing plants, companies specialising in concrete, or construction materials depots – know that Joaquín always delivers on-time. "Punctuality is an absolute must, in my opinion," he says assuredly.

Today's route takes him to Zaragoza, but he often drives to Castellón or Madrid. After delivering the load, Joaquín Andrés returns with an empty truck and so low fuel consumption values are therefore of utmost importance. "This truck is incredible. On average, it uses 29 litres of fuel every 100 kilometres. I'm very happy with that," he says. The FleetBoard telematics system offers a helping hand in all things profitability: "In the past, I didn't look much at my driving style but, with FleetBoard, I now drive better, more economically and more ecologically," he says proudly.

Joaquín Andrés was born in Santa Eulalia and enjoys working in such an environmentally-conscious company like Cementos El Molino, which operates its mines without using explosives. Instead of using environmentally hazardous mining methods, the company uses mining machines in order to extract materials like limestone, clay, iron, coal or gypsum. "It's difficult to explain, but I find it very relaxing to watch the mining machines at work in this dry landscape," he says.

Santa Eulalia has just over 1000 inhabitants. "Here, everyone knows one another," says Joaquín. In his spare time, he enjoys riding his motorbike and discovering new routes together with his friends. "People from Santa Eulalia are tough. Our region is dry and inhospitable, but I still find it a beautiful place. We've gotten used to the rough north wind. We're full of energy – the wind has somehow shaped our character."
