Moving the heaviest loads with turbo retarder clutch

Vehicle & Technology

Full power ahead.

Thanks to the turbo retarder clutch, Mercedes PowerShift 3 as an automated 16-speed transmission and the OM 473 engine, the New Actros SLT and the New Arocs SLT up to 250 tonnes can reliably put their power on the road.

The New Actros SLT and the New Arocs SLT up to 250 tonnes were the first Euro VI compliant heavy-haulage trucks. The trucks from the Mercedes-Benz Custom Tailored Trucks (CTT) operation in Molsheim are powered by the OM 473 engine. In its most powerful version up to 460 kW the in-line six-cylinder engine reaches a maximum torque of 3 000 Newton metres at 1 100 rpm. The turbocompound technology ensures even more spontaneous engine response right and contributes towards a high level of fuel efficiency.

The Actros SLT and the Arocs SLT are fitted with a 16-speed automated transmission. Mercedes PowerShift – optionally available with the driving modes ‘Power’ or ‘Heavy’ – transfers the tremendous power of the engine swiftly and precisely. The turbo retarder clutch (TRC) of the second generation enables smooth and wear-free starting up as well as manoeuvring at low speeds without any overheating after longer operation. In addition, the TRC and the High Performance Engine Brake increase the combined system braking power to 720 kW.

The New Actros SLT with air suspension and the New Arocs SLT with steel suspension are both available as 6x4 and 8x4 versions. In the case of the Arocs SLT there are also 6x6, 8x6 and 8x8 all-wheel drive versions. On the three- and four-axle trucks the wheelbases are very short in the interests of manoeuvrability. The four-axle versions also have an electro-hydraulically steered leading axle.

The side panelling of the cooling tower behind the cab is a particularly striking feature of the SLT. In addition to the combined cooling system for the engine and the TRC, the tower also accommodates the hydraulic system, the compressed air tank and the 900-litre fuel tank – technology in abundance!
