RoadEfficiency: greatest possible level of safety

Economics & Logistics

Great safety.

The greatest possible level of safety is also an integral element in the new RoadEfficiency concept from Mercedes-Benz Trucks. Celebrating their premiere at the IAA are the all-new Sideguard Assist and Active Brake Assist 4 which can also detect moving pedestrians. Both are safety systems which only exist at Mercedes-Benz Trucks.

Active Brake Assist 4* is an enhancement of the proven predecessor. It maintains the same functionality as the previous version and, at speeds of up to 50 km/h, it can also simultaneously warn the driver if pedestrians cross the path of the truck and initiate a partial application of the brakes. Operation and displays of the system remain unchanged from the previous version of the system. However, Active Brake Assist 4 uses improved radar technology featuring, for the first time ever, a measurement process for detecting pedestrians on the move. The technology is designed to be robust, so that it works with utmost reliability in all weather and light conditions. Active Brake Assist 4 features high-resolution detection of obstacles up to a distance of 250 metres, or up to a distance of 70 metres in the case of pedestrians.

Mercedes-Benz is also the first truck manufacturer to offer Sideguard Assist with person detection. The system supports the driver using visual and acoustic warnings if moving pedestrians and cyclists, or even stationary obstacles are located in the warning zone on the right-hand side of the vehicle and there is a risk of collision. Sideguard Assist can also assist the driver when changing lanes towards the right-hand side up to the maximum permissible speed and, at high speeds, the system takes on the function of a Lane-change Assistant.
