Secret Places

St. Peter-Ording, Germany.

The place:

A twelve-kilometre long beach up to two kilometres wide. Distributed widely along it: the characteristic buildings on stilts which were first constructed in 1911 to give restaurants and beach basket hirers protection from flood tides. Dunes, kite surfers and sand buggies – all set in Sankt Peter-Ording, lovingly known as SPO by local inhabitants and visitors. With its unrivalled backdrop, this beach resort on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein has inspired numerous artists and story-tellers. And these in turn have lent their own colour to the small community on the Eiderstedt peninsula. All year round St. Peter-Ording plays host to active sports enthusiasts, romantic hikers and nature-lovers.

Insider's tip:

"Whenever I can manage it, I make my way up north to SPO. It's only here that the word "expanse" takes on real meaning for me. I love the sea breeze and the wind and kitesurfers flying across the waves. The sailing regattas are particularly spectacular. But even when nothing special is going on, the beach is the ideal place for me to contemplate life from another perspective or simply switch off."
