The Bregenz Forest, Austria.

Transporting timber is a Herculean task, especially in mountainous regions. For the drivers, this means: semitrailers with heavy loads, narrow and unsurfaced forest tracks, steep climbs and complete concentration. In conditions like these, maximum traction and controlled power are vital.

Around half of Austria's total land area is covered by forest. In figures, this translates to around four million hectares and more than a billion cubic metres of timber. The Bregenz Forest is located in the Vorarlberg, the westernmost province of the Alpine Republic. This region is criss-crossed by dense mountain forests and lush meadows. The market town of Bezau, with around 2,000 inhabitants, is the main centre in the Bregenz Forest and until 1985 was the starting point of a narrow-gauge railway which transported timber to Bregenz.
