Winter Driving Hacks

DRIVERS

Make life on the road easier this winter with our clever hacks – suggested by real drivers.

The temperatures are dropping, frost is setting in and the roads are becoming more challenging; winter is coming. We asked real drivers for their top trucking hacks to make the cold mornings and freezing evenings easier.

Keep those odd socks.

Worried about your wipers freezing over? Dig out some old socks! The night before your shift, cover your wipers with the socks – it can help prevent them from becoming stuck to your windscreen. A great time-saver when you’ve got work to do.

Stop yourself sliding on slippery surfaces.

What do you get when you apply cat litter to your tyres? A homemade grit! If the roads are icy but there’s no grit in sight, try scattering cat litter on your tyres and the road – it will add grip and help prevent skidding.

Your teeth and your lights will be sparkling.

Is the wet weather and muddy roads making your headlights dull? Give them a spruce with a bathroom favourite – toothpaste! Yes it doesn’t just keep your teeth clean and shining, it’s great for removing grime and adding sparkle to your truck headlamps too. We recommend squirting some on to a sponge and giving them a good scrub – don’t forget to rinse!

Don’t compromise on staying hydrated.

Need more than one holder for drinks? Staying hydrated and alert is essential for good health and concentration on long journeys. Trainers make fantastic DIY drinks holders; just ensure they are secure to prevent spillages.

A clean cab makes a happy driver.

Life on the road can keep you busy, but that doesn’t mean you have to deal with an untidy cab. Try placing a cereal container in the driver’s door storage compartment, for a ready-made rubbish bin which you can use whilst driving.

Grab a bite without the mess.

Love a burger? Hate the mess? We have a smart hack for stopping the sauce staining your clothes – onion rings! Squirt your ketchup (or other condiment) in the centre of some onion rings inside your burger; it should stop the sauce spilling over the sides and in to your lap.

Be prepared for difficult driving conditions.

Stay safe and well-prepared over the next few months to avoid getting caught out in potentially dangerous situations. Here’s a list of cab essentials from Mercedes-Benz Senior Truck Trainer Chris Keen:

  • Food (tins/dry goods are handy)
  • Plenty of water and a flask containing hot drinks
  • Warm clothing and spare clothes
  • Hi Vis jacket
  • Mobile phone charger

He also recommends undertaking these truck checks before starting your journey:

  • Top up fuel, antifreeze, windscreen washer, oil and water
  • Assess tyre pressure and tread
  • Charge your mobile phone
  • Ensure your cab heater works
  • Consider snow chains and jump leads
  • Inform someone of your journey plan so you can be easily located

We hope everyone has safe journeys this winter.
