Trucking Milestones: 1976 – the 2632 kept the streets at the Olympics free of snow and ice

Series: Trucking Milestones

Clearing power galore!

In the winter of 1976, the Olympic athletes and countless fans met in Innsbruck. With a whole fleet, Mercedes‑Benz ensured that no one would slip and slide on the ice and snow.

In the early 1970s, Denver in the US state of Colorado was preparing for the XII Olympic Winter Games, until the majority of the population voted against the event in a referendum. The International Olympic Committee had no choice but to reopen applications for the games. The honour was awarded to Innsbruck, which had already been the host of the games in 1964. Even back then, Mercedes‑Benz had been involved. Reason enough for the organisers in Tyrol to make Mercedes‑Benz the “official snow-removal service” again in 1976.

In Stuttgart, this challenge was gladly accepted, but of course also with the intention of demonstrating what the appropriately equipped dump trucks and Unimogs could do. Around 30 vehicles made their way to Innsbruck, including the new generation of the 2632 K/6×4. The three-axle vehicle had plenty of power to transport masses of snow. But the somewhat smaller 1719 was also in action.

1.8 million square metres of parking areas alone.

There was a lot to do. The main task of the fleet was to keep all parking areas and their access points, all traffic areas within the competition venues as well as the Olympic Village and the press centre free of snow and ice. The parking areas alone covered 1.8 million square metres.

The Mercedes‑Benz vehicles also gritted and salted the areas. Not to forget, the team was prepared to transport artificially produced snow to slopes and cross-country skiing trails if there was a lack of snow. In fact, faced with high temperatures, it looked as if this would be necessary for quite a while. However, it snowed heavily on Innsbruck in time for the start of the games – and the Mercedes‑Benz fleet was able to concentrate fully on its main job.
