Secret Places

Cabo de São Vicente, Portugal.

The place:

Cabo de São Vicente on the Atlantic coast of Portugal, the most south-westerly point on the European continent. This is where Europe's brightest lighthouse points the way for seafarers. Its beam of light reaches more than 60 kilometres over the Atlantic. The Cape was already regarded as a magical place at the end of the world by the Romans. Nowadays tens of thousands of seasonal visitors come to enjoy the sunsets – and the "last German 'bratwurst' before America". This popular snack has been something of a cult and the Cape's second-greatest attraction since 1996. Quality grilled sausage, made in Germany: the idea is so successful that television teams have paid the place a visit almost 20 times.

Insider's tip:

"The road to the Cape crosses a flat plateau. The sea shimmers on the horizon. And then suddenly – no more land. It ends in a vertical drop of 70 metres, and the expanse of the Atlantic is at your feet. There is almost always a bracing wind blowing. There is something calming and liberating about it. You understand how the old Portuguese must have felt a challenge to explore the world beyond the water. For me this is definitely one of the finest views anywhere in Europe. And the perfect excuse to enjoy the last 'bratwurst' before America."
