Trucking milestones: 1977 – convoy to Tehran

SERIES: TRUCKING MILESTONES

The hell run.

Two state-of-the-art fire engines travelled from Austria to Iran in 1977.

The route from Austria to Iran is 4000 kilometres long. By 1977, it had been massively overused for years already as the Iranian economy had experienced a remarkable boom at the time.

The road is known among drivers to be notorious: not only the heavy traffic, but also the disastrous road and climate conditions coupled with the driving habits of the local road users do anything but make the job easy.

Rumour has it that long-distance drivers sometimes talk of the "hell run".

In 1977, Konrad Rosenbauer KG nevertheless sent two state-of-the-art airport fire-fighting vehicles to the international trade fair in Tehran. Both vehicles were manufactured on the basis of a Mercedes‑Benz 2632 A 6×6. The combination of vehicle technology from Mercedes‑Benz and know-how from Rosenbauer made the trucks the absolute top-of-the-range equipment for modern airport fire brigades.

An additional challenge for the drivers on the east-bound tour: they had to drive the trucks to the exhibition in immaculate condition – after all, exhibition vehicles have to look brand new.

And the drivers proved to be up to the challenge. the transfer took place without any major issues. Some visitors to the exhibition were even astounded to hear that the seemingly factory-fresh vehicles already had thousands of kilometres on the clock.
